Go deep or go home
High sun and warm water have pushed the Grand's bigger smallmouth into the deepest slots they can find — six to ten feet of green water over gravel, usually at the head of a long flat. Surface action shuts off by 9 a.m., but the midday streamer bite is as good as August gets if you dredge.
The formula: heavy sink tips, weighted sculpin and craw patterns, and a painfully slow retrieve with long pauses. Most eats come on the drop, so watch the line, not the fly. Set on anything that feels different.

Bonus: the first push of early salmon is showing in the lower river. If you hook something that doesn't jump and doesn't stop, clear the deck and hang on.
